“Ay! San Miguel” is a great song on the “Better Late Than Never” album because it has a Dominican palo opening and honors San Miguel who represents God in many Dominican barrios. In the palo break, you can hear the Central African Bantu roots of both Dominican palo (21 Divisiones) and Brazilian samba (Candomblé & Umbanda). On the island, many Dominicans reject San Miguel and all he stands for, but they will sing along and start dancing naturally to palo songs. This is Dominican roots.
