This is the fourth consecutive BAM season for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and the first under the leadership of new Artistic Director Alicia Graf Mack — a milestone worth showing up for.

The program opens with a new production of Hymn, Judith Jamison’s Emmy Award-winning 1993 tribute to Alvin Ailey, returning to the stage for the first time in over 15 years. Its libretto was written by Anna Deavere Smith, built from the personal stories and reflections of Ailey dancers, and set to a driving, percussive score by Robert Ruggieri.

On opening night, June 4, members of that original cast gather for a free roundtable discussion at 6pm in the Adam Space at BAM — an hour before the performance. RSVP is encouraged and the conversation alone is worth arriving early for.

The company premiere of Blink of an Eye, choreographed by Medhi Walerski and set to solo violin by J.S. Bach, follows — pure, virtuosic movement that demands full attention and rewards it completely.

The evening closes with Ailey’s iconic Revelations. If you have never seen Alvin Ailey’s 1960 masterwork performed live, this is your moment. Rooted in African American spirituals and Ailey’s own memories of growing up in Texas, Revelations is one of the most performed and most beloved works in all of dance. The joy it produces in an audience is something that stays in the body long after you leave the theater.

That’s what’s special about Ailey. The dancers, movement, staging, and storytelling deliver a visceral response that no other dance company offers. Every performance is a revelation.
