El Museo del Barrio is a Latino art museum and community center. It was founded in 1969 by El Barrio’s Puerto Rican community as a museum of Puerto Rican art.

As New York City is changing, El Museo is changing. It has broadened its focus to include Caribbean and Latin American art.

The Museum is buffeted by all the complexities of the Latin world. On the one hand, it can’t get itself together. On the other hand El Museo regularly produces outstanding exhibitions that are recognized by the art world at large.

The Puerto Rican community worries that the Museum is losing its Puerto Rican focus. Appreciating Puerto Rican art requires one to get outside themselves and the traditional art world context. Puerto Rican art looks as strange in Europe as European art looks in Puerto Rico.

Yet Latin is not an island. We are mixes of each other, even in Puerto Rico, maybe especially in Puerto Rico.

El Museo del Barrio has the potential to be a leading light in the art world and a real incubator for Latinos working in art. The art world is wicked smart, and it is paying attention.

This is perhaps especially true now that renowned Venezuelan contemporary art collector Patricia Phelps de Cisneros and her Colección Cisneros are influencing MoMA, the Museum of Modern Art and New York City’s art world in general.

We cannot achieve our potential just by waving a flag.  “Each one, teach one.”
