Origins

Latin Pop in New York City (Gallks/Adobe)

The Latin Pop category first went global with Sergio Mendes and Brazil ’66 in the 1960s.

In the 1970s, Latin Pop was defined by romantic ballads. To some extent, it still is. Artists like Julio Iglesias and Venezuelan Roberto Carlos.

In the 1980s, Puerto Rican boy band Menudo led the charge in Latin communities.

Gloria Estefan and Miami Sound Machine were the first Latin Pop artists to crossover. The Estefans went on to create some epic Latin music, but their beginnings were in Latin Pop. For years, their producers wouldn’t let them sing in Spanish.
