About Le Poisson Rouge

Le Poisson Rouge is in the space of the historic Village Gate (1958-1994). It was one of places where jazz and Latin mixed together in the 1960s and 1970s.

In the 1960s DJ Symphony Sid (Sidney Tarnopol, 1909-1984) hosted “Monday Nights at the Gate.” Symphony Sid was the Jazz radio DJ who helped popularize bebop.

In the 1970s, Roger Dawson hosted “Salsa Meets Jazz.” Now legendary artists like Machito, Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, Dizzy Gillespie, and Wynton Marsalis would get together to jam there

The old Village Gate sign still hangs on the corner of Bleecker and Thompson. Look for it on the second floor.
