Luis Fonsi is a Puerto Rican reggaeton singer. His Despacito Remix, with Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber, is the first mostly Spanish-language song to hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 since the Macarena did in 1996.

Luis Fonsi’s Échame la Culpa nominated for “Best Latin” at the 2018 MTV VMAs

“Échame la Culpa” means “Blame Me.” That’s funny because my girl always blames me, especially when it is her culpa (fault). You don’t have to ask for that. It’s automatic.

Despacito denied at the 2018 Grammy Awards

Despacito earned Grammy Award nominations for:

  1. Record of the Year
  2. Song of the Year
  3. Best Pop Duo/Group Performance

The most successful Spanish-language song in all of history was denied at the Grammys on January 28, 2018.

Honestly, when a song that sets sales records and is a global cultural phenomenon doesn’t win Song of the Year and Record of the Year, there must be something wrong with the Recording Academy.

Luis Fonsi’s Despacito is THE Song of 2017

Despacito was released on January 12, 2017. Despacito means “Slowly.” It was the Billboard 100 #1 from May 27 through September 9, 2017. In August 2018, it still tops the Hot Latin Songs chart. People around the world sing it, even if they don’t speak Spanish.

The only other Spanish-language song to hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 was the Los Lobos remake of the Ritchie Valens classic La Bamba in 1987.

This is the first Hot 100 No. 1 for both Fonsi and Daddy Yankee. It’s Bieber’s fifth.

The music video is also setting records. It is the third fastest video to reach 200 million views after Psy’s Gentleman and Adele’s Hello. The video is charmed with the beautiful smile of Zuleyka Rivera, Miss Universe 2006 also of Puerto Rico.

Celebrities around the world are making their own versions of the song.

Despacito should be with us for a while and we’ll look for Grammy recognition next year.
