About the Metropolitan Opera House

The Metropolitan Opera House opened officially in 1966 with a performance of Samuel Barber’s “Antony and Cleopatra.” The two giant murals in the lobby are by Russian painter Marc Chagall: “The Triumph of Music” and “The Sources of Music.”

There is something about the enormity of the stage that is very New York. It’s enormous like the city skyscrapers.
