About St. George Theatre

A short documentary on the St. George Theatre

The 2,800 seat Theater opened in 1929 as an independent vaudeville theater to bring top entertainment to Staten Island. The interior blends Spanish and Italian Baroque styles. This was right after the peak of Italian migration provided New York City with immensely talented Italian artisans. They built this theatre and many other beautiful buildings and churches in New York City.

The Theater went through many iterations until it closed in 1977, the year New York City hit rock bottom after a long decline from the peak vitality of the World War II years. New York City used to have many extravagant movie palaces, but only a few retain their original splendor. This is one of them.

The building sat mostly dark until the Cappozalo family started a not-for-profit in 2004 to save the Theater from being torn down. They brought live theatre back to Staten Island.

Staten Island is mostly Italian, but has a growing Hispanic community. Today the St. George Theatre produces live music, comedy, theater, children’s shows, and community programs. It’s a real feast for the senses.
