August is “Black August,” a time when we remember freedom fighters. Many Americans have been taught that people meekly accepted colonization and all that mess. The truth is that we fought back endlessly.

The Haitian Revolution (1791-1804) began on the night of August 21. It’s the only time in history that a people freed themselves and founded a nation. It’s an important moment in Latin history because the fighting pushed a Haitian Diaspora across the Caribbean as far as Trinidad and New Orleans which was then America’s most important city. By 1810, half of New Orleans was Haitian. A lot of our roots pass through Ayti. 🇭🇹
