Things To Do in NYC in October

Things to do in NYC in October, Hispanic Heritage Month (PintoArt/Adobe)
Things to do in NYC in October, Hispanic Heritage Month (PintoArt/Adobe)

Things To Do in NYC in October include the: Panamanian Parade, Hispanic Day Parade, Columbus Day Parade, Indigenous Peoples of the Americas Parade, and more. Indigenous Peoples Day (Columbus Day) is October’s national holiday. Hispanic Heritage Month builds to a climax on October 15. October ends with Halloween and Day of the Dead preparations.

October 1-5 | 6-12 | 13-19 | 20-26 | 27-31

October is Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15. The odd dates include national days of Central America, Chile, and Spain. Columbus Day (Indigenous Peoples Day) is a U.S. national holiday. September weather is early fall. Average temperatures range from 60-77 °F / 25-16 °C.

The October holiday is Indigenous Peoples Day / Italian Heritage Day (formerly Columbus Day). Cristóbal Colón was so violent with Indigenous Peoples and even Spanish colonizers in Hispaniola / Ayiti / Quisqueya (now Haiti and the Dominican Republic), that his Spanish sponsors arrested him, took him back to Spain in chains (really), and put him on trial. The Spanish eventually let him go because he made them rich, but never let him have power again.

The United States started the Columbus Day holiday to humanize Italian Americans in order to discourage Southerners from lynching them for associating with African Americans. It worked. Italian Americans went from being “others” to just being Americans. That’s why Italian Americans are attached to him, but the man was seriously flawed. Recent genetic studies suggest he was a Jewish Spaniard, not Italian after all. Even his claim to have been the person to discover the Americas was false. One of his sailors made the first sighting. Colón lied to claim the reward for himself.

October is one of our favorite months in New York City. It is peak fall. The cultural season is in full swing. It isn’t hot or cold. It is just right. Average temperatures range from 51-65° F (10-18° C).  Fall foliage usually peaks in the last two weeks of October.

The 4th National Indigenous Peoples of the Americas Parade 2025 lines up in Madison Square Park at 26th St in Manhattan’s Flatiron District, at 9am, with an opening ceremony featuring drummer Red Thunder Bear at 10am. The closing ceremony features Pueblo Nation Apache Crown Dancers. FREE. 🇺🇸

If you are a photographer, don’t miss this. There are beautiful authentic costumes that will blow your mind. One of the things that strikes me about the Parade is the Indigenous and African mix. Dancers enter the batey and salute the audience just like we do in bomba. Even hip hop’s iconic crossed-arms stance is a bomba dance move. In bomba songs, we improvise lyrics just like rappers. Hip hop is loved around the world now, but it all started here once upon a time in the South Bronx. ¡WEPA!

Dominican Film Festival

The 14th Dominican Film Festival New York 2025 ends with the closing night screening of “Carlota la Mas Barrial,” about a woman (played in drag by urban singer Carasaf Sanchez) who unites her barrio against a group of tigueres (gangsters) who want to take control. It’s at AMC Empire 25 in Hell’s Kitchen, Manhattan. $34. 🇩🇴

Men may take the stage and take the credit, but like everywhere else, it’s women who really manage the community. Barrios in the Dominican Republic may be poorer than anything you’ve ever seen, but they tend to be better organized and more unified than wealthy neighborhoods. It’s a paradox that the rich have money, but the poor have everything else.
