About the Times Square Theater District
The Times Square Alliance promotes Times Square culture. Their web site publishes lots of events. timessquarenyc.org
Tourists love Times Square. New Yorkers avoid it because its full of tourists.
“Long Acre Square” was a rural area transformed by the arrival of electricity after 1882, and the subway in 1905. The city changed the name to Times Square the year before the New York Times arrived in 1905. The newspaper started the Times Square New Year’s Eve traditions.
Times Square became New York City’s theater district around World War I (1914-1917). It roared during the 1920s, but the Great Depression of the 1930s and World War II started a long decline. By the 1960s, Times Square was a seedy adult entertainment district. The neighborhood hit bottom in the 1980s.
A long redevelopment finally took hold in the 2000s. Today Times Square is filled with tourists.

Be Street Smart
Times Square is generally safe, but like major tourist sites around the world, it attracts pickpockets and other characters who prey on tourists. Be street smart and keep your wallet and phone secure.
If someone offers you a gift like a CD or something, don’t take it unless you plan to tip them. Don’t even think about playing shell games on the street. You will lose. People in character costumes are not supposed to harass you. But if you take a picture with them, they will expect a tip. Be street smart and enjoy your visit.
