About Midtown

Midtown Manhattan (Mihai Laurentiu-Gorgan/Dreamstime)
Midtown Manhattan (Mihai Laurentiu-Gorgan/Dreamstime)

Midtown is between Bryant Park, the green space in the center of the photo, and Central Park in the distance beyond the skyscrapers.

The world’s largest central business district is also some of the planet’s most expensive real estate. Manhattan bedrock is near the surface, so developers can build very tall.

Midtown Sub-Neighborhoods

The Diamond District, Rockefeller Center, and Times Square Theater District are sub-neighborhoods.

Columbus Circle has a statue of the truly evil man who enslaved Indigenous Peoples, stole everything he could, and unleashed a genocide on the Americas. America’s Italian community embraced Colon because the Columbus Day holiday was started to try and stop American southerners from lynching Italian Americans for associating with African Americans. It worked. Italian Americans became just Americans, but the association with evil remains. Like Columbus statues across the America’s New York’s version is the City’s most expensive bird toilet.

Midtown Communities

Billionaire’s Row is the row of super tall skyscrapers along 57th St. There is only one in this old photo.

Club Row is a block of private clubs on 44th St between Sixth and Fifth Avenue.

Midtown Shopping Districts

Midtown is a place for flagship stores. Midtown’s main shopping districts include: 57th St, Fifth Avenue, Rockefeller Center and Times Square.

Midtown Government

Midtown Manhattan is governed by:

  • Manhattan Community District 5.
  • NY City Council Districts 3 and 4.
  • New York Congressional District 12.
