OCTOBER

Cuban Son

The Buena Vista Orchestra, led by Buena Vista Social Club’s original music director Jesus “Aguaje” Ramos, celebrates the Cuban son orchestra of old-timers that brought traditional 1950s Cuban dance music back out into the world in 1996. It’s at Colden Auditorium at Kupferberg Center at Queens College in Flushing, Queens; on Saturday, October 9, 2024 at 8pm. From $59. 🇨🇺

This is a rare chance to see some of the original old-timers from the world’s most famous Cuban son orchestra. We’re losing them one-by-one, so don’t miss this chance to see a legacy live.

MAY

Mexican Dance ~ Cinco de Mayo

Viva el Cinco de Mayo 2025 is a family Cinco de Mayo celebration of Mexican music and dance, featuring Tlen Huicani son jarocho of Veracruz, Mariachi Real de Mexico with Alexander Ponce, and Ballet Folklórico Mexicano de Nueva York, with special guest baritone José Adán Pérez; at Colden Auditorium at Kupferberg Center for the Arts in Flushing, Queens; on Sunday, May 4, 2025, at 3pm. From $10. 🇲🇽

This is one of New York City’s best annual Cinco de Mayo celebrations. It always features son jarocho, the Mexican roots music and dance of Veracruz, Mexico’s Caribbean gateway, where once upon a time Africans became Mexicans. There is also mariachi which evolved later from ranchera, the Mexican blues.

Afro-Cuban Jazz

Chucho Valdés: Irakere 50 featuring vocalist Emilio Frias, celebrates the legacy of the Cuban jazz band that led the shift of Cuban dance music from son Cubano to timba and beyond, with pianist Chucho and a great band of musicians who were influenced by Irakere. Valdés was just named a 2025 NEA Jazz Master. It’s at Colden Auditorium at Kupferberg Center at Queens College, in Flushing, Queens; on Thursday, May 8, 2025 at 8pm. From $25. 🇨🇺
