About the Metropolitan Opera House

The Metropolitan Opera House opened officially on September 16, 1966 with a performance of Samuel Barber’s “Antony and Cleopatra.”

There is something about the enormity of the stage that is New York. The two giant murals in the lobby are by Russian painter Marc Chagall: “The Triumph of Music” and “The Sources of Music.”
