Rigoletto

The Metropolitan Opera performs Verdi’s Italian opera ‘Rigoletto’ at the Metropolitan Opera House in Lincoln Center thirteen times with two casts between February 12 and May 10, 2019. From $20

The womanizing Duke of Mantua wants to sleep with Gilda, the beautiful daughter of his court jester Rigoletto. This is Michael Mayer’s production which moves the scene from Renaissance Italy to Las Vegas.

The winter cast stars Puerto Rican-Italian-Portuguese soprano Nadine Sierra as Gilda with Italian tenor Vittorio Grigolo as the Duke of Mantua, and baritone Roberto Frontali as Rigoletto.

The spring cast stars Italian soprano Rosa Feola as Gilda with Bryan Hymel as the Duke and baritone George Gagnidze as Rigoletto.

Nicola Luisotti conducts.

‘Rigoletto’

‘Rigoletto’ is a three-act opera by Giuseppe Verdi that premiered at La Fenice in Venice, Italy in 1851.

Francesco Maria Piave based the  Italian libretto on Victor Hugo’s ‘Le roi s’amuse’ (1832).

There is a good chance the song you hear in your head when you think opera is ‘La donna è mobile.’

The Act III quartet ‘Bella figlia dell’amore’ is also popular for how the character’s personalities are rendered in the music itself.
