Apollo Theater is the Soul of Harlem

Apollo Theater is a legendary African American theater that is the heart and soul of Harlem. Amateur Night at The Apollo launched the careers of many famous artists. There is something sacred about the place. You feel it as soon as you enter.

About

The Apollo opened in 1913 during the Vaudeville Era, just in time for the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s. Back in the day, Dewey “Pigmeat” Markham became one of the godfathers of hip hop with his famous refrain, “Here come the judge!”

The Theater began focusing on African American talent in 1934. In the 1940s, the Apollo was a center for jazz and swing. It was part of the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s-70s, which we call Harlem Renaissance 2.0. Today the Apollo Theater is at the center of the current renaissance in Black Arts which we call the Harlem Renaissance 3.0.

Amateur Night at the Apollo launched the careers of many stars including: Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, Sammy Davis Jr., James Brown, Bill Cosby, Gladys Knight, Luther Vandross, D’Angelo, and Lauryn Hill. “Be Good or Be Gone.”

Apollo is the ancient Greek god of the sun, light, music, and prophecy. He inspires music, dance, and poetry.
