El Clásico (The Classic) is a soccer game between Spain’s FC Barcelona and Real Madrid CF. It originally meant only Spanish La Liga matches, but now any game between the two sides is El Clásico.

El Clásico in New York City

Most of the time, we have to watch El Clásico on television or the internet, but it occasionally comes to New York City in the form of summer friendlies at MetLife Stadium. In Manhattan, you can watch the game with Penya FC Barcelona NYC at Smithfield Hall in Chelsea, or Peña Madridista NYC at the Playwright Irish Pub in the Garment District. 🇪🇸

El Clásico

Soccer in the Latin world takes on social and political dimensions.

  • FC Barcelona represents the working class.
  • Real Madrid CF represents the establishment.

Fans get really intense about it. Their team becomes part of their identity. A similar dynamic exists in many countries across the Latin world. You can learn a lot about someone just by asking who is their team.
