Ballet Nepantla

Ballet Nepantla is an award-winning, New York contemporary dance company that explores cultural in-between-ness by dancing Mexican folklore as contemporary ballet. 🇲🇽

“Nepantla” is the Aztec Nahuatl word for “in-between” – which accurately describes the Latinx experience.

You’ve never seen anything like this.

Andrea Guajardo is Founder, Artistic Director and Resident Choreographer.

Martín Rodriguez is Co-founder, Associate Director and Resident Choreographer.

Thank you Ballet Nepantla for sponsoring Mexican folkloric ballet at New York Latin Culture Magazine! We are learning from you.

| 🇲🇽

What New York City Ballet’s George Balanchine did with the folkloric dances of his native Russia, Ballet Nepantla is doing with the folkloric dances of Mexico.”

Ballet Nepantla is an Award-Winning Mexican Folkloric Ballet Company

Mexican Ballet Folklorico is presented by many community dance companies, but Ballet Nepantla takes it to another level. It is the only professional contemporary dance company in the United States to present Mexican folkloric traditions at this level.

What New York City Ballet’s George Balanchine did with the folkloric dances of his native Russia, Ballet Nepantla is doing with the folkloric dances of Mexico. The only similar company is sponsored by the government of Mexico in Mexico City. We are blessed to have this in New York.

Founder and Artistic Director Andrea Guajardo (Momix) brings a woman’s perspective to the Company. Chicana feminists in the American Southwest call themselves “Nepantleras.” Like them, Guajardo is rewriting the archetype of the Mexican woman. Her choreography recently won a Lotos Foundation Prize in the Arts and Sciences. The Lotos Foundation promotes artistic excellence in New York City.

Approaching its 5th Anniversary, Ballet Nepantla is a solid dance organization that has successfully rooted and is growing in NYC. The Company is has been selected to present at the prestigious 2022 Jacob’s Pillow dance festival.
