Dominican Day Parade announces $200,000 in scholarships

HARLEM, April 24, 2019 ~ The Dominican Day Parade announced its 2019 scholarship winners, new members on its Board of Directors, and the 2019 Parade theme in a ceremony at the Sugar Hill Children’s Museum in Harlem.

This reminds me of an old saying from the days of slavery when we were not taught to read or anything at all. Keeping us uneducated was a means of keeping us down. Afrika Bambaataa, one of the first hip-hop leaders, brought the saying to the South Bronx. That saying was “Each One, Teach One.”

“Each One, Teach One”

It means that if you have the good fortune to get some education, then you have a responsibility to help someone else from your community to get an education too.

Each One, Teach One. This is the core purpose of the Dominican Day Parade. Those of us who have found a way forward, reach back to give a hand to those coming up. Bendiciones.

Dominican Day Parade Scholarship Awards

The Parade announced fifty-two winners of a total of $200,000 in scholarships awarded to promising students of Dominican descent across the United States.
