FC Barcelona is one of the top Spanish soccer clubs and regularly one of the world’s best soccer clubs. “Barça” or the “Blaugrana” play at Camp Nou in Barcelona, Spain.

The club plays Spanish La Liga and Copa del Rey soccer, and usually UEFA Champions League. Barcelona’s style of play and management have been influential models for international soccer over the last decade. It runs one of the great soccer academies.

Latin soccer often has social-political overtones. Barcelona is the Spanish team of the working class and Catalonia, one of the distinctive regions of Spain.

FC Barcelona

FC Barcelona was founded in 1899. The club is owned by its supporters. That’s kind of cool. It’s motto, “Més que un club” (More than a club), is a reference to the way the club represents Catalan society and culture. When I first saw the motto, I thought it was mispellt, but it’s Catalan, not Spanish. The club’s song is “Cant del Barça.”

Barcelona’s arch-rival is Real Madrid, the team that represents upper-class Spain. Games with Atlético Madrid are also intense because these are usually the top three Spanish soccer teams.

El Clásico

Barcelona vs Real Madrid is “El Clásíco,” the world’s most popular club soccer match and one of the world’s most watched sporting events.

There are two El Clásicos every year, one in Barcelona and one in Madrid. While El Clásico used to refer to La Liga matches only, it is now used for any match between them. The two teams also meet regularly in UEFA Champions League matches.

Championships

The club has an impressive championship record.

  • La Liga champions 28 times, including 2024-25.
  • Copa del Rey champions 32 times, including 2024-25.
  • Supercopa de España champions 15 times, including 2025.
  • UEFA Champions League champions 5 times, the last in 2014-15.
  • FIFA Club World Cup champions 3 times, the last in 2015.
