New York Fashion Week

New York Fashion Week is held twice a year. Spring/Summer women’s collections are shown in September. Fall/Winter women’s collections are shown in February.

It was founded as Press Week in 1943 by Eleanor Lambert who did public relations for the New York Dress Institute, which was the American fashion industry’s promotional organization at the time. 1943 was World War II. Journalists couldn’t travel to Paris for the shows, and the American industry wanted to put more focus on American designers.

Stan Herman and Fern Mallis of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) repackaged the fashion shows as New York Fashion Week in 1993. It was long held in tents in Bryant Park, but now shows in various venues. It is currently produced by WME-IMG a talent agency conglomerate.

You know Fashion Week is coming when New York City streets are suddenly filled with hordes of tall, thin, attractive young people.
