About the Public Theater
The Public Theater is not just great theatre, it is theatre curated around the big questions of the day.
The theater was founded by Joseph Papp in 1954 as the Shakespeare Workshop to showcase new playwrights and performers. It moved to its current home, the former Astor Library in the East Village, in 1967.
The very first production was the world-premiere of “Hair” which became the iconic Broadway show of the 1960s. Many productions move to Broadway and film including Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Hamilton” (2015) and John Leguizamo’s “Latin History for Morons” (2017).
Today, the Public is an incubator for artists of color.
