The Public Theater is not just great theatre, it is theatre curated around the big questions of the day. Milestone Broadway hits like “Hair” in 1967 and “Hamilton” in 2015 were first produced at The Public.
The theater was founded by Joseph Papp in 1954 as the Shakespeare Workshop to showcase new playwrights and performers.
It moved to its current home, the former Astor Library in the East Village, in 1967. The very first production was the world-premiere of “Hair” which became an iconic Broadway show of the 1960s.
The Public Theater produces the Under the Radar Festival, a festival of international theater, every January.
Oskar Eustis has been Artistic Director since 2005.
Kenya-born, Resident Director Saheem Ali has been turning theatrical plays into outstanding radio plays during the pandemic. 🇰🇪
