Panamanian Independence Day

Panama celebrates two independence days. It celebrates independence from Spain and separation from Colombia.

Panamanian Independence Day from Spain

Panama gained independence from Spain on November 28, 1821. It was part of Gran Colombia (1821 – 1831) which included parts of what are now Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guayana, Panama, Peru, and Venezuela. This is Panamanian Independence Day.

Sovereignty over the Panama Canal

The Panama Canal was long U.S. territory.

Thanks to the efforts of the Panamanian government and U.S. President Jimmy Carter, Panama regained sovereignty over the Panama Canal on December 31, 1999.

Nobody ever gave back territory like that. It was a moment of which all Americans of the United States can be very proud.
