Ballet Hispánico is a Latin contemporary dance organization with a touring company, school of dance, multidimensional community arts outreach, and its own studios. Since 1970, it has grown into America’s largest Latinx cultural organization.
By preserving and developing Latin dance, Ballet Hispánico has become one of America’s cultural treasures. It has grown into one of the pillars of New York City’s dance world alongside New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Dance Theatre of Harlem.

Ballet Hispánico is One of America’s Leading Latino Dance Companies
The company was founded in 1970 by Tina Ramirez (1928-2022). She was born in Venezuela while traveling with her Mexican bullfighter father. Tina’s vision was to build a company for Latin dancers. The National Medal of Arts winner led her creation until 2009. 🇵🇷🇲🇽🇻🇪
Born in Venezuela where her Mexican bullfighter father was performing, National Medal of Arts winner Tina Ramirez (1928-2022), the granddaughter of a Puerto Rican political family, brought ballet, modern dance and folkloric dance together as Ballet Hispánico in 1970. She envisioned greatness in her community that few others could see. She led the company until 2009.
Famous alumni include actors Jennifer Lopez, Nancy Ticotin, and Michael DeLorenzo.
Cuban American Artistic Director Eduardo Vilaro (Luna Negra Dance Theater) carries the legacy. According to Vilaro, Ballet Hispánico’s logo was inspired in part by New York Latin Culture Magazine’s. 🇨🇺
Today, Ballet Hispánico is one of New York City’s “Big Five” dance companies.
