Sotheby’s November Latin American Modern Art auction

Sotheby’s Latin American Modern Art auction in May and November is one of the pillars of New York City’s Latin American art market.

The auctions are accompanied by museum-quality exhibitions. They are a great education in art history and the art market.

Auction Highlights

Frida Kahlo

“Niña con Collar” (1929). Estimate $1,500,000 – $2,000,000.

Frida Kahlo (Coyoacán, Mexico, 1907-1954) is the most famous Mexican artist. She has become a global pop icon of art, womanhood, and a multicultural identity. Today Frida’s reputation exceeds that of her husband Diego Rivera.

“Niña con Collar” (Girl with Necklace) was given by Diego to an assistant of Frida in the time when the couple was in New York. The aging assistant kept the painting in the bedroom of her California home until now.

Diego Rivera

“Paisaje Cerce de Toledo” (1913). Estimate $1,200,000 – $1,600,000.

Diego Rivera (Guanajuato, Mexico, 1886-1957) was a Mexican painter and muralist. He was the most famous Mexican artist of his day.

Rufino Tamayo

Rufino Tamayo (Mexican), “Sandías y Naranja” (1957). Estimate $1,200,000 – $1,800,000.

Wilfredo Lam

Wilfredo Lam (Cuban 1902-1982), “Volière d’un Ongle” (1942). Estimate $250,000 – $350,000.

Amelia Peláez

Amelia Peláez (Cuban, 1896-1968), “Mujer con Peces” (1952). Estimate $125,000 – $175,000.

Fernando Botero

Fernando Botero (Colombian, 1932), “Still Life with Hot Soup” (1968). Estimate $500,000 – $700,000.

Carlos Cruz-Diez

Carlos Cruz-Diez (Venezuelan, 1923). “Physichromie (Baroque)” (1961). Estimate $400,000 – $600,000.

Jesús Rafael Soto

Jesús Rafael Soto (Venezuelan, 1923-2005). “Mural a Tres Columnas” (1969). Estimate $650,000 – $850,000.

Alejandro Otero

Alejandro Otero (Venezuelan, 1921-1990). “Tablón 40” (1987). Estimate $300,000 – $400,000.

Sergio Camargo

Sergio Camargo (Brazilian, 1930-1990). “Orée” (1964). Estimate $275,000 – $325,000.

Willys de Castro

Willys de Castro (Brazilian, 1926-1988). “Objeto Ativo” (1961). Estimate $400,000 – $600,000.
