Giros (1985)
This album established Fito across Latin America. It remains his seminal recording.
Yo Vengo a ofrecer mi corazón and 11 y 6 have become Latin pop music anthems. Indigenous Argentine folk singer Mercedes Soza’s recording ofYo Vengo a ofrecer mi corazón is a classic. In Latin America, this is one of the songs we all grew up with. The poetry is beautiful. It still makes me cry to hear that song porque yo venga a ofrecer mi corazón pero tú no me escuchas.
Fito rereleased the album on its 30th Anniversary in 2015.
Del 63 (1984)
The title of Fito’s first album is a reference to the year of Fito’s birth. He is describing his age in the Latin way by saying he is a 1963 model, like a 1963 model car. Fito’s career began right out of high school.
He published from his hometown in Rosario, Argentina, but got attention in Buenos Aires, the cultural capital.
1984 was the time of New Wave and big hair bands. Fito is the Argentine equivalent.
This album made Fito popular in Argentina.
Rock Nacional
Fito is one of the artists most associated with Argentina’s Rock Nacional or Rock Argentino. In the states we call it Rock en Español or Latin Alternative.
When we were kids, we used to lip sync English rock without having any idea what we were singing.
Rock Nacional was the beginning of rock composed in Spanish instead of just translated from English.
Can you imagine the impact of hearing rock music for the first time in your own language? How liberating.
