Garment District NYC

The Garment District NYC, Fashion District or Fashion Center, once produced most of the clothes in the United States. It was a time when being close together made it easier to do business.

The neighborhood’s iconic image is racks of clothes being pushed down the street between businesses. Every block used to have a speciality. One was for buttons, another for cloth, and so on. There are still a few remnants in the neighborhood.

The Garment District is now the home of Macy’s and Bryant Park. Ripley-Grier studios is popular with dance students. The Honduran Consulate is here.

The Garment District Alliance promotes local business. garmentdistrict.nyc

A Long History

New York City’s fashion industry got its start making clothes for slaves. No kidding. The industry provided jobs for new immigrants. The rise of clothing manufacturing mirrored the rise of the United States as an industrial power, and the explosive growth of New York City in the early 1800s.

The industry grew by making uniforms during the U.S. Civil War (1860-1865). New York is one of the world’s fashion cities. Fashion is still a multi-billion dollar business in New York.
