Wow. We have no idea how Lincoln Center is going to pull this off, because many of these bands are really loud. But how cool is it that Lincoln Center is using their classical music hall for all of this? They reopened the new David Geffen Hall this season with a Brazilian cleansing ceremony by Oyá, the Yoruba orisha of death and rebirth. Lincoln Center gets it.
How is Arab Latin?
We have Arab roots. Many Latin Americans have some direct Arab heritage, often Lebanese, especially in Colombia and Brazil.
Arab traditions came to the Americas through Mother Africa and Spain. Most of Spain was Arab from 711-1492. People and place names that start with “al” have Arabic roots. “Al” means “the” in Arabic.
The blue note and melisma (warbling on one note) are North African traditions from the Arab world.
Melisma is a key characteristic of American gospel. The blues is the root of American popular music.
The pandereta used in Puerto Rican plena is an Arab drum. The diana (E-le-le, le-le-le, A-la-la, le-le-le”), the call that begins a salsa song, is the call to prayer. It can address Yoruba Elegúa, and/or Allah.
Islam is one of the great religions of Mother Africa. In the Caribbean, we have met people who speak Arabic because they were taught to pray at home.
Dutty Boukman, an early leader of the Haitian Revolution was a Senegambian Islamic priest. He was called “Boukman” because he was a man of the book, The Koran.
The Haitian Revolution influenced the entire Caribbean, including New Orleans.
So we are Arab too!
