Things to do in NYC in August, Black August (Carlos David/Adobe)

Things to do in NYC in August 2025 include Summer Streets, Harlem Week, Ecuadorian Parade, Dominican Day Parade, India Day Parade, and New York Carnival.

August is Black August, a commemoration of freedom fighters who are wrongfully incarcerated. Unfortunately there has been a lot of that in our country, and it is getting worse.

There are no U.S. national holidays in August, but the last two weeks of the month are family vacation time in the United States. In Latin Europe, the Assumption of Mary on August 15 is the traditional summer vacation time. Labor Day is in September, but Labor Day Weekend starts in August this year.

New York City’s August weather is late summer with average temperatures of 69° to 84°. It’s hot and muggy with afternoon thunderstorms. Wear short sleeves and short pants when you can, and protect yourself from the sun.

Thank you for sponsoring New York Latin Culture Magazine in August 2025!

Haitian History

Preparations for the Haitian Revolution are said to have been made at a gathering in the forest around Bois Caïman, Vaudreuil, near Cap-Haitien in what is now Northern Haiti on August 14, 1791. There is debate about the place and date. Some put the meeting on August 21, although I suspect there were meetings on both dates. Legends make the gathering sound like a stormy night of scary rituals and animal sacrifices. The stories make Haitians appear savage, which they are not. The reality was probably much simpler. Religion is a powerful organizing principle and Vodou is a beautiful, highly-developed religion, but regardless of their religious practices, nearly all Haitians consider themselves Christians. When Caribbean people gather, we often slaughter an animal for a communal meal [I eat freshly slaughtered pig most Sundays]. We do have big storms at times, but it’s long past time to discard this Hollywood version of history. 🇭🇹
