The last weeks of August until Labor Day (next month) is traditional summer holiday travel time. Late summer in New York City is hot and humid (68° to 83°F) with afternoon thunderstorms.

It’s Black August in memory of all freedom fighters. National days include Bolivian, Ecuadorian and Uruguayan independence days and Dominican Restoration Day.

The Haitian Revolution began on the night of August 21, 1791. It was a pivotal moment in human history. This was the only time in history that people freed themselves and founded a nation. The colonizers were shocked. It was the tipping point in the freedom movement. The revolution created a Haitian Diaspora around the Caribbean, including to Cuba, Trinidad, and New Orleans. New Orleans was America’s most powerful city. By 1810, half of New Orleans was Haitian. What we now call Creole, Latin Music and Jazz have many influences, but some of the deepest roots are in Haiti. 🇭🇹
