Contemporary Dance in NYC is represented by many dance companies, including Ballet Hispánico, Ballet Nepantla and others. Contemporary Dance blends Ballet, Modern, Jazz and African Diaspora dance into all sorts of fusions.
The evolution of dance mirrors the evolution of art. The strict narrative and movement of Ballet, became pure emotion in Modern Dance, and pure abstract movement in Contemporary Dance.
Merce Cunningham was one of the first choreographers to step away from Modern Dance traditions in the 1940s. That happened in New York City.
Now it’s all mixed together, and African Diaspora traditions are being recovered in the mix. That gets interesting because in African Diaspora tradition, dance is how we pray. That is something most dancers can relate to.
