About Madison Square Garden

The current Madison Square Garden is actually the fourth building to carry the name.

  1. The first was a former railroad yard northeast of Madison Square, run by famed New York circus showman P. T. Barnum from 1879 to 1890.
  2. The second was on the same site from 1890 to 1925.
  3. The third was on Eighth Avenue at 50th St, from 1925 to 1968.
  4. In 1968, the current Garden replaced the old Pennsylvania Station whose demolition launched New York City’s architectural preservation movement.
