About the Times Square Theater District
“Long Acre Square” was a rural area transformed by the arrival of electricity after 1882, and the subway in 1905. The city changed the name to Times Square the year before the New York Times arrived in 1905. The newspaper started the Times Square New Year’s Eve traditions.
Times Square became New York City’s theater district around World War I (1914-17). It roared during the 1920s, but the Great Depression of the 1930s and World War II started a long decline. By the 1960s, Times Square was a seedy adult entertainment district. The neighborhood hit bottom in the 1980s.
A long redevelopment finally took hold in the 2000s. Today Times Square is filled with tourists.
